Fully-funded PhD fellowship (4 years) at Ghent University (Belgium)

Well-qualified applicants are invited to apply for a 4-year PhD position within the research project “Coming after. Late antique ecopoetics” funded by FWO Flemish Research Foundation and supervised by Prof. Marco Formisano, Department of Literary Studies, Ghent University. 

The successful applicant will be prepared to write a dissertation on a range of texts and genres of late Latinity (4th-6th centuries) with attention to the themes of this research project on ecopoetics in the Latin literature of late antiquity which include but are not limited to landscapes, sounds, and things. The project’s goal is to uncover and give visibility to widely neglected yet characteristic features of this period’s poetics. 

The selected applicant will begin employment by 1st October 2022. In order to be eligible, candidates must have obtained their MA degree at the time of application, or be able to demonstrate that they will have that degree in hand by the start of the doctoral fellowship. 


  1. an MA degree in Classics with a focus on Latin literature; 
  2. excellent grades;  
  3. excellent knowledge of the Latin language (preferentially also knowledge of Greek)  
  4. a demonstrable interest in the literary and/or cultural history of Late Antiquity, literary theory, and ecocriticism. 

We expect that the successful applicant will: 

  1. Write and defend a PhD dissertation within the four years of the fellowship; 
  2. Contribute to the scholarly and intellectual life of the Department of Literary Studies and the University by pursuing excellence in their research and by publishing results in internationally recognized venues; 
  3. Work with the supervisor and other members of the Department, and contribute to our collegial and stimulating academic environment;  
  4. Contribute to the scholarly activities of this (e.g. by organizing events in collaboration with the supervisor and/or other members of the Department). 

We will offer the successful candidate: 

  1. a contract for four years of full-time employment as a PhD student, subject to positive evaluation after each year;  
  2. an internationally competitive salary in accordance with the salary scales for PhD students established by the Flemish government;
